Shark attack in Porirua Harbour.
28th January, 2015
What would try to eat a one metre long shark, in a sheltered estuary? If you live near and regularly use Porirua Harbour you probably don't want to know the answer. The photo shows the damage done to a female rig 102 cm long that I caught today. When looking closely at the wound there were several other scratch/bite marks either side of the big gash. The likely cause is another shark, but what shark? A school shark? A blue shark? Maybe a 7-gill shark? Its hard to tell, all are likely visitors to Porirua Harbour. However, the wound looked to me like it had started to heal, and she was more likely to have been attacked by a larger shark out on the coast on her way to the harbour.
