Windy Waitangi weekend
7th February, 2015
It has been too windy for absolutely ages, 25 + knots from the north, changing to 30 knots from the south, only to change back to the north gusting 45 knots with no reprieve for over a week now. I need a window of 2-3 days of calm weather to deploy my tracking tags because they work best when the wind blown waves aren't too big. Radio waves (that used by GPS satellites) don't travel well through water, the larger the waves the more my towed tags are covered by water and position estimates go from every 30 seconds to one every 5 - 30 minutes.
Instead of tracking rig sharks in Porirua Harbour I've been refreshing my quiver of tracking tags. I now have 5 in great working condition, enough to track 2 sharks for as long as they remain in the harbour.
